The Executor’s Estate Bank Account: What It Is and How It Works

3 October 2026 /

Quick Answer

Every deceased estate needs a separate estate bank account opened by the executor with the letters of executorship. All assets are collected into it, debts and fees are paid from it, and the balance is distributed to heirs after the J187 account is advertised and confirmed.

Why the Estate Needs Its Own Account

From the moment of death, the deceased’s money belongs to the estate — not to the family. The executor must open a separate estate bank account to collect assets, pay debts and eventually distribute to heirs. Mixing estate money with personal accounts is the fastest way to land in front of the Master with an objection — or worse.

How the Account Is Opened

  1. The estate is reported and the executor receives letters of executorship from the Master.
  2. The executor takes the letters, the death certificate and the estate number to a bank.
  3. Most banks run dedicated estates departments with specialist consultants.
  4. Accounts the deceased held are closed or converted, and balances move into the estate account.

What Flows Through the Account

  • In: bank balances, investment payouts, policy proceeds without nominated beneficiaries, sale proceeds, money collected from debtors.
  • Out: funeral and administration costs, executor’s fees, Master’s fees, estate duty where payable, creditor claims from the J193 process, and finally the heirs’ shares per the liquidation and distribution account.

Income After Death

Interest, rent and other income earned after the date of death is estate income — taxed in the estate’s own SARS registration (where the executor’s 6% income commission applies), and recorded separately in the account. Clean capital-versus-income records make the final account far easier to approve and advertise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the family use the deceased’s account in the meantime?

No — banks freeze personal accounts on notification of death. Only the estate account, operated by the appointed executor, may be used.

What if the estate is very small?

Section 18(3) estates under R250,000 often skip a full estate account — banks pay smaller balances directly against the Master’s letters of authority. See our small estates guide.

Who can see the estate account?

The executor accounts to the Master, and the account’s figures appear in the advertised liquidation and distribution account — that public inspection is a core protection for heirs.
