Proof of Publication for Estate Notices: What the Master Accepts

Quick Answer

Proof of publication for an estate notice means the Gazette page, the newspaper tear sheet or online page copy, and the publisher’s confirmation. The Master of the High Court can call for it whenever the estate file is checked — keep it with the estate documents.

What Counts as Proof of Publication

When a deceased estate notice is advertised, someone must be able to prove it happened. The Master of the High Court accepts:

  • The Government Gazette page containing the notice — downloaded free from the GPW legal gazettes portal, or the tear sheet if lodged by post.
  • The newspaper tear sheet (the actual page from the printed paper) or the digital page copy from an approved online publication under Chief Master Directive 1 of 2025.
  • The invoice/receipt from the publisher confirming the placement date.

When the Master Asks for It

Proof of the J193 supports the executor’s claim period; proof of the J187 supports the 21-day inspection period. The Master may call for it when the account is lodged, when an objection is raised, or when the estate is audited. Lost proofs are the single most common administrative hiccup in estates — keep them with the original will and estate file.

How to Find Your Notice in the Gazette

  1. Open the GPW legal gazettes portal.
  2. Choose the gazette for the Friday your notice was scheduled.
  3. Search the PDF for the estate number or the deceased’s surname.
  4. Download and file the page — that PDF is your proof.

What We Send You

Every advert we place closes with a proof pack: the Gazette page (or a link to it), the newspaper or online placement confirmation, and the placement invoice — everything the Master expects, in one email. All included in the flat R400 per advert.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a screenshot of the online advert enough?

A digital page copy from an approved online publication is acceptable under Directive 1 of 2025, but keep the publisher’s confirmation too — the Master wants an official record, not just an image.

What if my notice never appeared?

Check the following Friday’s editions first, then query the publisher or GPW with your lodgement receipt. This is why a reputable advertising service matters — we confirm publication before invoicing you.

Do I need proof for both the J193 and J187?

Yes — each advert is a separate publication with its own proof, filed together with the estate documents.
